Agenda Number: 8 Section Name: CONSENT CALENDAR Account Number: 10-5141 File ID: 26-11565 TO: City Council
FROM: Alex Khojikian, City Manager
PREPARED BY: Police Department
MEETING DATE: September 08, 2026
SUBJECT:

San Mateo County Gun Relinquishment Task Force — Amendment RECOMMENDATION:

Approve Amendment No. 2 to the agreement with the County of San Mateo to maintain the assignment of one Police Officer to the Gun Relinquishment Task Force by extending the term for two years through November 20, 2028, and increasing the amount reimbursable to the City by $600,000 for a new cumulative total reimbursable amount of $1,900,000; and authorize the Chief of Police to sign the agreement in substantially the form presented.

BACKGROUND:

The City of San Mateo has assigned a Police Officer to the Countywide Gun Relinquishment Task Force (GRTF) since 2022.

The GRTF operates out of the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office to coordinate and share resources among law enforcement agencies to enforce unlawful firearm possession laws, promote safety, and reduce gun violence. The term of the current agreement concludes November 20, 2026, and all parties wish to continue the assignment of a Police Officer to the GRTF, so that the City and County can continue to work collaboratively on these efforts.

The City will receive full reimbursement of all costs including salary, benefits and overtime for the Officer assigned to the GRTF. Amendment No. 2 to the Agreement will extend the term through November 20, 2028, and correspondingly increase the total amount authorized to be paid to the City in reimbursement by $600,000, for a new total cumulative reimbursable amount of $1,900,000. It is the City’s policy that intergovernmental agreements be approved by the City Council.

BUDGET IMPACT:

The County will provide full reimbursement to cover the salary, benefits, and task force related overtime for the Officer assigned. The anticipated reimbursement revenue has already been planned for in the adopted FY2026-27 budget.

ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION:

This action is not a project subject to CEQA, because it is an organizational or administrative activity that will not result in direct or indirect physical changes in the environment. (CEQA Guidelines Section 15378(b)(5).)
