Subject: Fair Pay for San Mateo Library Staff
Dear City Council,
I am a patron of the San Mateo Public Library.

I am writing to you because I am troubled to learn that the staff who run this wonderful library are paid less than staff in comparable positions in other Bay Area cities.

As a former resident of San Mateo, the San Mateo libraries were a refuge where I would spend hours exploring the stacks, reading books and magazines, and listening to music. I am currently a Sacramento resident and a user of library services, and 1 believe libraries are an essential public service that should be fully supported.

While I do not visit San Mateo often and have used San Mateo library services only a few times in recent years, I remain grateful to the library staff and for the programs and services they provide, including:
• Special collections in business, biotechnology, California history, nonprofit research, and genealogy • Extensive international language collections in Chinese, Farsi, Japanese, and Spanish • Science lectures presented by renowned researchers • Financial education workshops with well-regarded community partners • Expanded Project Read services, including off-site workshops and tutoring • Seed library • After-hours programming, such as the popular Trivia Nights and crafting events • Homebound delivery service • Sewing and needlecraft workshops • 3D printing I am not aware of any other public library in the region or in Sacramento that offers the same breadth and depth of services.

I think it is only fair that library staff compensation reflect the quality of the services they provide. I urge you to bring their compensation up to the market median and provide a cost-of-living adjustment that keeps pace with inflation during this difficult time.

Thank you,
Jim Kong
