Dear City Manager:
SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR MEMORIAL TREE IN HONOR OF MARY DELGADO Community Development Staff and the City’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Officers would like to request a memorial tree and plaque to honor Mary Delgado, our colleague and friend, who passed away on July 18, 2022.
Mary Delgado served the City of San Pablo as a Senior Permit Technician for over 20
years. During her tenure she served our community with a kind and joyful attitude. Her job included daily contact with the public in many capacities from permit technician duties, to business licensing and code enforcement activities. Mary’s greatest attribute besides her vast Building Code knowledge was her lovely way of handling requests from our customers and colleagues; she served with a smile and always strived to deliver exceptional customer service.
Mary showed kindness inside and outside of her job. She displayed great generosity when buying gifts for the adopt a family program in San Pablo and volunteering her time to serve in the youth soccer league that promoted healthy living for many of our San Pablo residents.
Mary had many accomplishments during her career with San Pablo. Most recently she managed the C OVID rental assistance program helping so many of our residents in need. She navigated through over 10,000 messages by calls, texts and emails to ensure that she did not miss any details that could help a family receive the much- needed help being offered by our City.
Mary was the true definition of an individual embracing diversity. Mary’s fluent Spanish was actually her adoptive second language and she communicated with our community masterfully. She loved her work and it showed! Many of our residents have expressed sadness for her l oss, she definitely left behind a legacy of great service, kindness and love for our community.
To honor Mary and her legacy, S taff recommends planting a small flowering tree on the west side of City Hall where many of the employees enter and leave. For the plaque, staff recommends a medium sized boulder with plaque implanted like the existing one near the eagle sculpture. Photos attached. The costs for this effort would be about $1,000 for tree and plaque purchase and installation.
Staff is not requesting public funds for this memorial. The funds will be private donations from city staff who voluntarily choose to contribute. Should this request be approved, Staff proposes a planting ceremony in late October/early November.
Should you have any questions regarding this request please contact Chief Building Official, Oscar Davalos at : [email protected] or Community Development Director, Libby Tyler at [email protected] or DEIB Officers at [email protected]
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Community Development Department, in collaboration with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Officers
