A WRITTEN STATEMENT BY THE
ARTIST DESCRIBING THEME OF
THE ART
This concept of this piece is the message that Time is Sacred. It reflects the traditional stories and culture of the original Ohlone inhabitants of the land where the piece is being created. This includes the redtail hawk, the salmon, and the coyote with whom the Ohlone had special relationships and were involved in their traditional stories. At the center of the piece is an Ohlone woman holding a traditional basket and praying towards the sky. Ohlone people understood that their baskets connected the maker, the plants that they were made with and their ancestors. The past, present and future are reflected within each basket. The landscapes in the background of the piece are the San Pablo Creek, where the Ohlone had their villages, and Mount Diablo, the site of the Ohlone creation story. The peak of Mt. Diablo is transformed by a translucent acorn, which was a staple food for the community and reflects the Bay.
