Community Schools Coordination

For the 2022-23 school year, San Pablo schools focused on implementing the San Pablo Beacon Community Schools Initiative priorities including health and wellness, family engagement, and school culture and climate. In this section, we summarize findings drawn from interviews with the school’s Principal, Beacon Director, and lead agency supervisor as well as documents provided by the City of San Pablo.

In addition to their daily responsibilities and tasks, the Beacon Director focused on developing and administering a needs and assets assessment to understand the experiences of teachers, staff, students, and families. They initiated other data collection activities to capture a deeper understanding of relationships at Bayview. With the support of the City of San Pablo, they were able to work with an intern from the University of California, Berkeley ’s Public Service Center to analyze the data collaboratively.

Health and Wellness
"Prior to this year, we didn't have any mental health practitioners outside of our school psychologist, speech therapist, and occupational therapist. So students who needed one-on-one counseling services were on a waiting list. Our CARE team referrals showed us that students need wraparound services." — Beacon Director
In response to Bayview teachers, administrators,
and staff who shared their feedback about the
CARE referral process , the Beacon Director
started the James Morehouse Project, which
provided one-on-one counseling and youth
development support to students . The Beacon
Director also worked with Vision to Learn, another
community partner, to supply eye exams and free
eyeglasses for three-quarters of the student
population that did not pass the vision screening.

Additionally, they reached out to Families in
Transition (FIT) and foster youth at Bayview to
connect them to resources and services.

The Beacon Director partnered with teachers and staff on campus who oversaw other health and wellness programs such as Girls Who Run and structured recess time. They continued to encourage more adults to engage in direct services for students at Bayview to foster a sense of shared commitment and responsibility. At the end of the school year, they organized a staff social and staff versus student kickball game.

Throughout the school year, t he Beacon Director facilitat ed CARE team meetings. Meeting attendees regularly reviewed service provider data and monitored the progress of students who were referred to the CARE team for support. In preparation for the following school year, the CARE team created referrals for sixth -grade students entering middle school a nd other students who needed academic support during the summer.

Family Engagement
“This year a huge focus of mine has been family engagement. To have parents come to school. To allow parents in go into classrooms. To do genuine things, fun things.”— Beacon Director The Beacon Director felt that f amily engagement was critical to elevate post -pandemic. They planned a range of gatherings and activities to increase their presence and participation at Bayview, including
Family Math and Literacy Nights and monthly family
read ins. A unique event they arranged were Parent
School Walkthroughs. They invited families to visit
classrooms and complete a survey based on their
observation of interactions between teachers and
students. Beacon Directors internal and external to
West Contra Costa Unified have expressed interest to

Another important aspect of family engagement was consistently and broadly communicating with parents and caregivers. The Beacon Director relied on different platforms and approaches, such as ParentSquare, in -person events, and family surveys to keep families informed about school concerns and meetings, as well as current and potential community resources and services for families to access.

School Culture and Climate
“The Beacon Director always put on a fantastic field day, which we have coming up soon. And we're looking forward to students from the middle school who come back and assist us with that. And then he plays a really big part in enrichment activities based around each holiday that we have. And one that we have coming up is our multicultural day on May 25th.” — Principal The Beacon Director coordinated clubs, activities, and events to build the school culture and climate. They worked with Bayview staff to hold special events that celebrated literacy, diversity, and community. They regularly invited leadership club members from nearby Greenwood Academy High School to participate in read-ins at Bayview. For African American Heritage Month, the Beacon Director welcomed community
members, as well as Greenwood Academy students,
to read books to Bayview students.

At the end of the year, the Beacon Director
coordinated a field day event to celebrate the
completion of state testing. Student leaders from the
Bayview Student Council and Greenwood Academy
High School helped run activity stations including
bubble soccer, water balloon toss, and chalk art.

Lessons Learned
At the close of the interviews, the Principal and Beacon Director reflected on their experiences from the past year.

• Community schools thrive when the Principal and Beacon Director have a trusting relationship.
• Staff must also be considered as important members of the school community.

Plans for Next Year
The Principal and Beacon Director also took time to share their plans for the coming school year.

• Offer wraparound social-emotional learning support and services for students. • Provide culture and climate professional development for the full staff.

“We are looking to get a literacy
coach or program assistant to
work with our students in the
upper grades. But mostly, it's the
SEL component that we really
need assistance in. That would
be really helpful.”
— Principal
