Hi, I’d like to attach my public comment for todays meeting i just wanted to say that i feel like the police
department has their whole roles confused. We call
9/11 when we need help. Isn’t it their job to protect
and serve? the video clearly shows different and how
they use the law to justify their brutality towards
civilians because they know the law is on their side.
To lie about the situation, seem to brag about what
they did, take a picture of the victim, say “he was
having a bad day” and even say “you’re giving me a
lot of experience in excessive force” is highly
disturbing. it seems like every time they think
someone is disobeying them, it triggers them and
puts them in a power trip where all they want to
demonstrate is who’s in charge at the expense of
others . the very people they should protect and
serve are left injured
, in this case with a broken nose and a concussion
over a case of open beer! and i think that their whole
mentality needs to change. This case at least has
video that contradicts the officers account of things.
The decision to try both of the officers shouldn’t be
difficult. Just watch the video. I urge SRPD to do the
right thing.

Subject: SRPD accountability and justice for Mateo
Dear City Clerk Lara,
I’m appalled by the SRPD’s racialized violence and the county’s response to it and implore you to support measures that hold the PD accountable. This is nothing new and the pattern needs to stop. In the Race Counts study, Marin County is the 2nd most racially disparate County in California. One of the indicators is crime and justice in which BIPOC are disproportionately impacted by police contacts, arrests, and incarceration.
The only think unusual about this incident is that the PD was caught - caught abusing their power, caught using excessive force, caught taking a “trophy” photo, caught lying about what happened in their report and joking about it on camera afterward. This is not a uniquely disgusting incident, and as much as the SRPD likes to say that this is not reflective of their department, it absolutely IS! This behavior took place in a culture of policing that is illegal and morally reprehensible. It does not happen in a vacuum.
The City needs to respond in a way that’s commensurate to the systemic violence. It can start by listening to the community without justifying or defending that these were just “bad apples.” It can hire a neutral party to do an analysis of training, policies, interactions with the public, complaints and work with the Chief on an action plan to transform the culture. It can give an oversight body subpeona power.
This would be a good start.
I want justice for Mateo and I want the officers who participated in or watched without intervening to be held accountable for violations of department policy, the law, and Mateo’s dignity.
Thank you,
Gwen Gordon, MA, SEP

To: Distrib- City Clerk <[email protected]> Subject: Police Brutality Incident needs to be discussed tonight To whom it may concern,
I would like to see Officers Nail and Mazariegos terminated and Officer Nail charged with assault. In addition, anyone else in the SRPD who helped cover up the atrocious July 27 incident should receive disciplinary action.
I am offended and appalled. I know how hard the SRPD has worked to build trust with the residents of San Rafael and in particular the Canal Community. All trust has been lost. We don’t need cops like Brandon or Daisy; they and everyone who participated in covering this up or who ignored this need to be prosecuted.
This needs to stop!
Sincerely,
Sally Kuhlman
