Dear Councilmember Kertz,
Please accept our sincere apologies for not attending the SR City Council meeting tomorrow night to accept the National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) resolution. Thank you very much for agreeing to accept it on behalf of Marin CIL and the San Rafael Disability Community.

Here is a message you can read on our behalf:

For almost five decades Marin Center for Independent Living has worked to support people with disabilities and older adults to achieve their independence and community integration goals. Competitive employment has always been a priority for In 2024 we merged with MATRIX Parent Network, which is now a program of Marin CIL that seeks to support families with disabled children, including transitional aged youth. Now more than ever, employment for disabled persons in the North Bay is a focus of our future.

We seek to advocate for competitive employment, with jobs that provide pay equity and promote disabled persons into positions based on their skills and outcomes without hindrance from climbing the career ladder based on institutionalized stigma, ableism and ageism.

The National Disability Employment Awareness Month is an opportunity to speak to these values, remind us all to assess and reassess our hiring and management practices and act with intention to increase disability employment.

We thank the San Rafael City Council for recognizing this important month that signifies the essential inclusion for our community members, their access to work leads to their access community independence. The City of San Rafael is establishing itself as a leader in Marin County and the North Bay for disability inclusion by passing this resolution.

We are also thankful to San Rafael City Councilmember Rachel Kertz for delivering this message. Rachel has been a stalwart support of disabled persons and the care systems that support them. Recently She began working with our Director of Public Policy and Community Engagement Ted Jackson to educate homecare providers on emergency and disaster preparation for their clients and themselves. This includes a training organized with Marin CIL in August 2024, co-presenting on the topic with Ted to county-level government workers and disabled advocates at the Ventura Government and Disability Summit, and an upcoming Caregivers Town Hall in December 2024. Councilmember Kertz' support is vital to reaching our goals.

Thanks again for your support and continued partnership to make San Rafael and Marin County an example of inclusive design for all people in all ways.

Sincerely, Eli Gelardin, Chief Executive Officer, Marin Center for Independent Living.

I hope this works, thanks again for reaching this for us. Warmly, Ted --
