To: Distrib- City Clerk <[email protected]> Subject: Question for the fire dept speaker City Council Jan 21st Now that we probably all understand that we could be facing an urban firestorm here in San Rafael, I was wondering if changing the code for neighbors' fences between houses might slow the spread of a firestorm.
Currently, the code is 6 ft with 7 ft allowed with a variance. They can be made of wood and generally are. Since the height restriction is so low for some neighbors, “green” fencing of large trees/bushes have been planted for privacy. I am assuming that these green fences would accelerate the spread of an urban firestorm.
Would a metal fence, approved by both neighbors and using a design approved by the City, be helpful is slowing the spread of a fire? I understand that there are issues with code changes, planning approval, etc but with a looming danger to our entire community, I think those could be addressed.
So would it help or hinder fire fighting efforts?
Thank you.
