I appreciate you making it an agenda item addressing the community's interest and concern. On behalf of the cycling community, we are very glad you made these points of consideration:
• Maintain policy as a council that focuses on how to have the ideals of the bicycle plan manifested in the community
• Push towards the goals of the LRSP to reduce bike/ped KSIs and get closer to Vision Zero
• Accept the hard tradeoffs in being committed to developing a safer mobility system that's in the true interest of everyone using the roadways, not just for cars but other users of the roads
• Express a true awareness of safety as a priority as well as acknowledging impacts on the community
•
• Ask community members to look at the bigger vision in the community Thanks again for your leadership in making San Rafael better for the vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians in San Rafael!

Hi Joe - Thanks for your email and I wanted to share with you the email response for anyone who has emailed the City and Council about this project. I recently included links to the Local Road Safety Plan as well as to the recent BPAC meeting so the documents will look familiar.
The City wants to ensure that accurate information is available to the community so I've pasted below a recent email from DPW Director Miller. There are embedded links that provide facts and next steps on this project and I encourage you to take a moment to click through them.
I also wanted to emphasize that when the Council adopted the Local Road Safety Plan last year, it was communicating to the community the community's desire (which the Council shares) to reduce bike/ped/car incidents of which San Rafael has the highest in Marin County. Here is a link to that meeting: https://www.cityofsanrafael.org/meetings/citycouncil-april-2-2024-tuesday/ This action was supported by San Rafael's Bike Ped Advisory Committee.

Subject: Please support a safer 2nd/4th Street Intersection Hello Councilmembers and City Staff,
I strongly support the effort to redesign 2nd/4th Streets intersection in the West End to be safer for all road users, especially those walking or biking. It's vitally important that the new design include a safer and more direct crosswalk across 2nd street and a mechanism to slow westbound 4th Street vehicles.
I do understand that there is opposition from local residents to the closing of the left turn onto Marquard Ave. Currently the conflict with cars turning left at the intersection of the 2nd St multi-use pathway to West End Ave is very dangerous to cyclists. That intersection of the 2nd St pathway to West End Ave is a major thoroughfare with a steady high volume of cyclists traveling to West Marin from SF and the East Bay.
We're glad you're considering the safety of cyclists in your plan. Please approve the funding to complete the design.
Thank you,
Joe Mulligan
