Dear Mayor Kate and San Rafael City Councilmembers,
I'm writing as a cyclist who frequently rides in Marin County and cares deeply about safe streets for all. The tragic death of Chris Brignetti, coach, father, and cyclist, at the intersection of Freitas Parkway and Las Gallinas Avenue highlights a failure that must not be repeated.
This same location has seen at least five other serious bicycle crashes. The City identified safety improvements in its 2018 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, including narrowing lanes to reduce speeds, but chose not to implement them during the 2023 repaving project.
Freitas Parkway’s wide design encourages dangerous speeds. Proven, low-cost solutions, like lane narrowing and protected bike infrastructure, could have saved a life.
I respectfully urge you to:
Implement the 2018 recommendations for Freitas Parkway.
Audit and address other high-injury corridors citywide.
Act swiftly, before another preventable death occurs.
Chris's loss is a tragedy. Please ensure it leads to real change.
Sincerely,
Jeremiah
