Subject: Preventing Another Tragedy on Point San Pedro Road Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
I am writing following the death of Lucia Jennifer Blandina Sontay Vicente, who was killed last week while crossing Point San Pedro Road. This loss is devastating, and it is not an isolated incident. Two young people have now been killed on this corridor within a decade.
I want to acknowledge the work the City has already done to advance pedestrian and bicycle safety, and I recognize that Point San Pedro Road presents real challenges due to its split jurisdiction between the City and the County. Cross-jurisdictional coordination is difficult, but difficulty cannot be an excuse for inaction when lives are at stake.
Point San Pedro Road functions today as a high-speed arterial, yet it serves neighborhoods, schools, and people traveling by foot and bike. Its design encourages speeding and long, unprotected crossings. Incremental improvements after tragedies are not enough.
In my work with Sustainable San Rafael, I regularly hear from residents who want safer streets not only for environmental reasons, but because they want their children, neighbors, and elders to be able to move around the city without fear. This concern is shared broadly across our community.
I urge the City to pursue corridor-level action, in coordination with Marin County, including lower speed limits where permitted under state law, lane reductions where traffic volumes allow, continuous protected bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and safer, more frequent crossings.
The City has adopted Vision Zero. This is a moment to demonstrate what that commitment means in practice.
Thank you for your service and your attention to this urgent matter.
Sincerely,
Ben Snyder
