City of San Rafael
Proclamation in Recognition of
CELEBRATING AMERICA'S 250th ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, on July 4, 1776, the thirteen American colonies declared independence from Great Britain, giving birth to a new nation founded on the self-evident truths that all people are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and
WHEREAS, this commemoration invites all Americans to reflect upon the full and complex history of our nation – to honor the founding ideals expressed in 1776, recognize the struggles and sacrifices that have shaped our journey, and acknowledge the many individuals and communities whose contributions have strengthened and sustained our democracy; and
WHEREAS, this milestone anniversary provides an opportunity not only to celebrate our nation's achievements, but also to engage in honest reflection, meaningful dialogue, and civic participation that deepens our understanding of what it means to be an American and our shared responsibility to preserve and advance the principles upon which this nation was founded; and WHEREAS, the City of San Rafael, incorporated in 1874 as Marin County's oldest city and proud home to a diverse community of nearly 60,000 residents, has long been a place where the American promise of liberty, opportunity, and civic participation is lived every day; and
WHEREAS, San Rafael's vibrant neighborhoods, cultural institutions, schools, houses of worship, and businesses embody the pluralism and perseverance that are central to the American story — a story still being written by every resident who calls this city home; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of San Rafael encourages all residents, community organizations, schools, and businesses to participate in commemorative activities throughout 2026 and to reflect on America's enduring values of democracy, freedom, and equal justice under law.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Rafael hereby proclaim 2026 as the Year of America's 250th Anniversary in the City of San Rafael and call upon all citizens to join in commemorating this historic milestone with pride, gratitude, and renewed dedication to the democratic ideals upon which this great nation was founded.

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of San Rafael stands in solidarity with cities and counties across California and the nation in celebrating the extraordinary journey of the American people — past, present, and future — and reaffirms its commitment to the values of liberty, equality, and opportunity for all.

Kate Colin
