Monthly Report
September 19, 2024
August Report
GREG GARNER, CHIEF OF POLICE
CRIME TRENDS
After a 2yr low in monthly reported crime in July, reported crime rose from twenty-three (23) to twenty-eight (28) in August, a seventeen percent (17%) increase. This represents two consecutive months in the summer where the average daily reported crime was below one (1) per day.
Violent crime in August mirrored July, with seven (7) reported in each month.
Once again, domestic violence was the greatest reported violent crime. There were two (2) reported burglaries in August, down 33% (3 v 2) from July. Theft rose 33%, increasing from twelve (12) in July to sixteen (16) in August. There were three (3) vehicles reported stolen in August (two reported in July)
SIGNIFICANT CALLS FOR SERVICE
On August 28th, at approximately 11am, several callers advised of a male subject waiving a gun in the air near Pitman Farms. Another caller flagged down a FSO Deputy at Central and Academy and advised that they saw this same incident. A Pitman Farms Security Guard observed the male subject waiving the gun and advised officers of such including the subject’s description. The subject was observed walking near the Southwest corner of North and Academy and when he observed our officer and a FSO Deputy, he immediately threw the gun down to the ground and surrendered. The gun was an old .22 Revolver with no ammo in it and the firing pin appeared to be sheared off. The subject has an extensive criminal history and has been in prison before. He was taken into custody for brandishing a firearm and other drug-related charges. He was later booked and transported to Fresno County Jail.
TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT
There were no fatal collisions during this reporting period. There was a total of thirteen (13) total collisions in August, the same number reported in July. Nine (9) of the total collisions in August were non-injury, four (4) collisions involving injury, and six (6) involving DUI. 121 traffic citations were issued in August, with 71 moving violations and 50 non-moving violations. 4 E - 1

September 14th is HEROS Night, and we will have a significant presence at the event, The curriculum for the Department’s first “Residents Academy” has been finalized and we are taking applications. RE: FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORT FOR AUGUST
For the month of August, there were 283 calls for services for ambulance services within our area and within surrounding areas. Crews were also dispatched to 53 requests for services in August for fire calls, including house fires, trash and warming fires, building fires, vehicle fires and unintentional or false alarm calls. This total equates to 336 calls in August, or just under 11 calls per day.
Chute times are measured from the time the station is notified of an alarm to the time the unit goes enroute.
For the month of August our average chute time was measured at 1 minute, 15 seconds, well below our benchmark of 90 seconds. Approximately 69% of the time our crews have a chute time of less than 90 seconds.
Our travel time is measured from the time the unit is enroute to the time that we arrive on scene. In August, our response time showed an average response time of 6 minutes and 14 seconds. Our total call time for the month of August measured at the 90% percentile was 1 hour and 36 minutes. This equates to roughly over 2/3 of a 24-hour period where units are busy on calls for service.
In August we introduced three new Firefighter candidates to the Fire Department. They have successfully completed the in-house fire academy and are now on their probationary year. In addition, we have participated in meetings for the upcoming Farmer’s Markets and National Night Out in September. Interviews for Non-Safety Paramedics were held, and one candidate has started the background process with a potential other candidate interviewing the first week of September. Lastly, the Fire Station Remodel Project continues to progress. Diede Construction has completed the majority of the interior framing, rough utilities including electrical, HVAC, plumbing and fire sprinkler systems. They are working to finish the roofing, installation of door frames and polishing of exposed concrete before starting drywall and finish work.
I am of course always available to answer any questions you have.
