TheresolutionfaultsIsraelforawarstartedbyHamas. ThelossoflifeandsufferingisfeltbyboththeIsraelisandthe Palestinians. TheresolutionminimizesthesufferingofIsraelis. 250,000Israelishavebeeninternallydisplacedduetothe actionsofHamasandHezbollah. Terroristsabducted240hostagesonOctober7th. ThisresolutioncallsIsrael’s prisoners, manyofwhomhavecommittedcrimesincludingstabbingsandbombingpopulatedcivilianlocations, hostages.

Israeliswantpeaceandaquickendtothewar. AceasefirewithHamas, ashasbeendemonstratedrepeatedlyovertime, willendinthespillingofIsraeliblood. SeniorHamasleadershaveindicatedtheirintentionstocontinueintheirgoalto eradicatethelandofIsraelofJews. HamasisthecatalystforthePalestinianandIsraelicasualties. ThepeopleofGaza deserveabetterfuturewhichispossibleonlyonceHamasisgone.

Aceasefirewouldperpetuatethestatusquo, allowingHamastocontinuetocontrolandterrorizeGaza. Donotseta precedentthatcrimesagainstIsraeliandPalestiniancivilianspaysoff, bysupportingthisCeasefireResolution. TheCity ofSantaAnashouldnotinadvertentlyincentivizemoreviolence, attheexpenseofinnocentIsraelisandPalestinians.

I ama formerprofessorof ArabAmericanandMiddleEastStudies. Myparentscamefromhumble beginnings, bothDepressionkids. Mypaternalgrandparentscamefromadjacentvillagesin NorthwestLebanon, and mymother’s parentshailedfromSweden. Mypaternalgrandparents divorcedshortlyaftermyfatherturnedtwoyearsold and myauntwasfour yearsold. At the time, my grandmotherhadno oneto carefor myfatherandaunt, her sistershadnot yet immigratedfrom Lebanonto the U.S., so mygrandmotherwasforcedto placethemin fostercarewhileshesoldlinens to clientsby appointment, a commontradeof the Syrian-Lebanese. Whensheremarriedto a Lebanese-bornphysicianfromBuffalo, NewYork, he wasabusiveto myfatherandaunt. Myfather beganworkingas a car mechanicandtransitionedfroma usedcar dealerto becominga successful ownerof multiplenewcar dealershipsin downtownLosAngeles. I wouldlike to addthatmyfather wasregardedas a prominentLosAngelescivicleader, andservedon the campaigncommitteeof EdwardRoybal, the first Mexican-AmericanCongresspersonfromCaliforniasince1879.

As it pertainsto the topicat handandlendscredibilityto whyI supporta cease-fire, myfather’s first cousinwasa prominentdiplomatwhoafterworkingas a Thirdsecretaryto the UnitedNations, and an ambassadorfromLebanonto Iraq, Greece, andGermany, servedas a primenegotiatorwithIsrael 1 duringthe 1992MadridTalks, concerningIsrael’s brutal20-yearoccupationof Lebanon. Onthesame panelwasDr. HaidarAbdelShafiwhorepresentedthePalestinianAuthority. Growingup in the greaterSyriancommunity (Syrians, Lebanese, Palestinians, andJordanians), I alwayshavebeenin solidaritywithPalestinianswhomIsraelhasdispossessedandoccupiedtheirlandfor 75 years, much akinto the historyof the indigenouspeopleof the Americas.

I lived3-4 monthsat a timefor 6 yearsin TheGazaStrip, assistingthe GazaCommunityMental HealthProgrammein the analysisof surveydata, whichrelatedto the traumaticeffectsof Israel’s warson Gaza, andtheongoingsiegeon the mentalhealthof thePalestinianpopulation. Thisdata wassubmittedto the UnitedNations. I alsotaughtAmericanEthnicStudiesat the AmericanCorner at Al AzharUniversity, andresearchmethodsat Al AqsaOpenUniversity. In 2011I experienced Israel’s periodicbombingsof GazaCity, whichI havedocumentedin op-edsin Al Jazeeraand Counterpunch.

Overthe yearsI developedclosefriendshipswithcolleaguesandstudents, the latterof whomI taught at Al AzharUniversity. I contactmyfriendsdailyto checkif theyarealiveor not. ThroughoutIsrael’s genocidalcampaignon Palestiniansin Gaza, theyhaveshutoff the internetandblockedthe cell towers. Threeweeksago, duringIsrael’s carpetbombingof NorthGaza, I contactedmyfriend, whois like a sisterto me, andsherelateda horrificstoryto methather fatherwassiphoningwaterfroma meagerwatersourceto give to his threegrandchildren, twotoddlersand a six-month-old. Whilethe IsraeliOccupationForceswereshellingin his neighborhood, a pieceof shrapnelenteredherfather’s rearend, blowingoff his sacrallumbar, whichdamagedhis colonandrectum. Henowis in Cairo, Egypt, waitingfor reconstructivesurgeryof his buttocksanda sphincterotomy. Thephotosshowing the extentof theinjuryof his largeintestineare far too graphicto attachto this letter. Asa sidenote, myfriend’s familyare not supportersof Hamasas alsowasthe caseof otherstudentsof mineat the university.

On myfriend’s wayfromNorthGazato the Rafahborderto enterEgypt, travelingby car andby foot on the roadwastreacherous. Contraryto whatIsraelinstructedthe Palestinianpopulationthat travelingfromNorthto Southwouldbe safe, this wasnot the case. Palestinianswerenot safeas they walkedon Salahdinroad, whichconnectsNorthGazato the South. MyfriendandotherfriendsI spokewith, recountedthattheyandotherPalestinianswerehumiliatedby theIsraeliOccupation Forces, andsomewomenwereaskedto removetheirhijabsandstripnakedbehindIsraelitanks.

Israelisnipersabounded, andmyfriendwitnessed “thingsthatsheshouldneversee”, scorched, mutilated, andheadlesscorpses, whichshehadto crossoverto headto the Rafahborder. Israelnow is mowingdownKhanYounisin the South, andthe numbersare climbingto closeto 20,000. I ama quantitativeresearcheranda trainedsurveyanalyst, andcarefulin citingnumbers. I mustcaution againstour U.S. administrationthatthe Ministryof Healthis a Hamasorganization. ThePalestinian Ministryof HealthpredatesHamasandwasinstitutedby the PalestinianAuthority. Moreover, in previouswarsbetweenIsraelandHamas, the UnitedNations, andalso, the U.S. StateDepartment havestatedthatthenumberof Palestiniandeathsreportedby the PalestinianMinistryof Healthin Gazahasbeenaccurate. In the interim, Israelhaskilled250Palestinianciviliansin the WestBank wherethe PalestinianAuthority, not Hamas, is in control. As a scholarof MiddleEastStudies, I must educatethosewhomightnot realizethatbothHamasandHezbollahare consideredpartof the politicalfabric, respectivelyof PalestineandLebanon. Theycannotbe consideredas paramilitary forces, theyhaveministriesof education, welfare, finance, anda policeforce, manyof whommight supporteitherof thesetwopoliticalparties, but in needof employmentworkfor them. thIn closing, whatI understandis thaton December19, SantaAnaCouncilmemberswill reconveneto offeranotherwatered-downversionof the initiative, I hopefor thesakeof our brothersandsistersin2 Palestinewhoare facinga genocide. I thankwholeheartedlyJonathanHernandezandBenVasquez for remainingsteadfastin includingthe cease-fire clauseintotheinitiative. I realizethatthosewho objectto the ceasefiremightbe doingso for politicalgain. I completelyunderstandit is a hardchoice for you, butin theend, youwill haveto live withyourselfas Israel’s massmurderof innocent Palestiniansto exterminationwill not eliminateHamasor anyresistancemovementto followin their place. PalestiniansandPalestinianswithIsraelicitizenshipmustlive in dignityandhavethesame equalrightsandlive in onedemocraticstatewithIsraelis. #No justice, no peace. Also, I wasshocked by MayorAmezcua’s commentat the endto the remainingattendees, whowerein oppositionto us, thatif theywerescaredto leavethe chamberstheycouldstayinside. MayorAmezcua, are wehuman animalsas IsraeliDefenseMinisterGallantcallsPalestinians? Youmustunderstandthatwe ArabAmericans, PalestinianAmericans, andour allies, who representedthe majorityin defendingtheinitiativeproposed, werenot happywiththe outcome, and weare the onesstrugglingagainsta U.S. administrationthatis biasedagainstPalestiniansmuch beforeOctober7th.

We are notagainstJewsandare notAntisemitic. In fact, weprotestin solidaritywithJewishVoicefor Peace, andIf NotNow, whohavedonea tremendousjobin bringingthe 75 yearsof Israeli occupationandinjusticeagainstthe Palestiniansto the forefrontby organizingamazing, mass demonstrationsthroughoutthe UnitedStates (e.g., GrandCentralStationin NewYork). Ourstruggle is againstZionismof all forms, includingWhiteChristianZionism, NOTJewishpeople. Please understandthe cleardifferencebetweenthe two.
