Sinceourpartnershipbegan, wehavecollaboratedwithJohnathanonimpactfulprogramssuchasthefirst SummerNightLightsin 2016andeveryyearsince, gangpreventionandinterventionprogramming, andthe firstChicanoHeritageFestival. Johnathan’sinvolvementin theseeventshasalwayscenteredonupliftingand empoweringourcommunity, withnopersonalagendaotherthantoserve. Hiscontributionstotheseinitiatives havebeeninvaluable, fosteringasafer, moreconnectedenvironmentforthepeopleof SantaAna.

AsthecouncilmembertooneofthemostdiverseWardsinSantaAna, his advocacyisformorethanjusttheHispanicsinSantaAna. HeunderstandsthatthereareAfricanAmericansthatarefar moreunderrepresentedandneedavoiceinthecommunitythatwehelpedtobuild. ManyAfricanAmericanswere stationedherefrom "TheSouth" whentheElTorobasewasbuilt, includingmyfamilyinthe50s. Wefoughtforour country, purchasedhomes; webuiltbusiness (literallyandfiguratively) alongsideourneighbors.
TheCityofSantaAnawentonrecordasa “SafeHarbor” city. Sofar, it’snotbeenwillingtogoonrecordasanallyforits AfricanAmericandiasporas. Whenit comestoourholidays, we’retoldthatit’s “justan \[expensive\] party”, butnoother grouphasreceivedthissamecriticismdespitereceivingtrifoldbudgets.
