Subject: Bike Lanes on Lafayette street
Date: Monday, September 11, 2023 11:33:09 AM
Hello,
I am unable to attend the September 12 city council meeting, but wanted to write in support of bike lanes on Lafayette Street. I am a bicycle commuter who lives in Santa Clara. I bike to and from work either using Caltrain and surface streets or VTA light rail and surface streets. I also bike to local events such as San Jose Earthquakes games from my home in Santa Clara.

Having bike lanes on Lafayette would provide a safer alternative on my VTA commute home when the San Tomas Aquino Trail is closed (like it currently is) than the existing detour, which involves traffic merging onto and off the freeway at high speeds. This does not happen on the Lafayette overcrossing which does not connect directly to the freeway. Bike lanes on Lafayette will also allow another safer alternative route to access the Santa Clara Caltrain station and the nearby Caltrain bike undercrossing to get to PayPal park from Santa Clara. I also value that bike lanes on Lafayette would connect to the existing dedicated bike/ped overcrossing on Lafayette of the Caltrain tracks. More lanes and safer crossings would be much appreciated!
I most support Option 1 to remove parking and install protected bike lanes on both sides.

Thank you,
Julie

Hi my name is Beth Avalos I live at 2110 Lafayette St. and I would like to get on the record that it makes no sense to put a bike lane in the two blocks that are in question for a couple of reasons. Number one, there is very little bike traffic and the amount of cars that park in this short two blocks is a lot. Currently there is already some parking issues and I’m not sure where the people who live on the street are going to move their cars Both DiGuilio and Memorex Drive have no parking. The reason for no parking on Memorex Drive is due to houses that occupy that street. One of the tenants/owners, not sure which, let’s homeless people park their cars & vans, and now even school bus on the side and the other rental house has all of his business vehicles there.

At two of the previous meetings I attended there were a couple of other options, including making the bike lane on the other side of the street and currently there’s no parking on that side, so this seems like a better option than to displace all the people on Lafayette that do park cars there.

Regards, Beth

Subject: Lafayette Street Bike Lanes -- Council Agenda Item 5 Date: Monday, September 11, 2023 10:20:17 PM
Hello,
I am a long time Santa Clara resident (since 1985) and in recent years have taken up bicycling. I ride up to 50 miles per week.

I would like to suggest that Option 1 — protected bike lanes on both sides of Lafayette Street be adopted.

Protected bike lanes are much safer on a busy street in such an industrial area and this street is in important route which can make it easier to get to different parts of town.

Safety is one of the chief concerns I hear from friends and colleagues who do not currently bike. Having more protected biking infrastructure would help to encourage more of us to bike, especially as electric assist biking takes hold, and barriers to physical conditioning are coming down. Let’s help encourage more people to bicycle and keep them safe— it’s a good use of the money.

Thanks for your consideration.

Regards,

Subject: Support for Lafayette St bike lanes
Date: Tuesday, September 12, 2023 10:01:03 AM
Dear City Clerk,
I am writing with regard to today's council meeting agenda item 5 which is the proposal to establish bike lanes on Lafayette St. As someone who both cycles and drives on Lafayette, I support this proposal, specifically option #1 which involves the creation of protected bike lanes on both sides of the street. On the occasions when I have ridden along this route, I have observed that the narrow lanes and parked vehicles make "sharing" of the road quite unsafe.

Cars frequently drive at least 40 mph on Lafayette especially in the portions where there is little pedestrian and cyclist use. When encountering a bicyclist, drivers often need to swerve out of the right lane and cut back into the lane after passing which makes it extremely dangerous (and unnerving). Creating these protected bike lanes will not only make it considerably safer for existing riders like myself but encourage others to bike on Lafayette as well.

Sincerely,
Tuwin Lam
