PETITION FOR IMMEDIATE PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK IMPROVEMENT To the Council of the City of San Jose, CA & the Council of the City of Santa Clara, CA We, the undersigned residents of Valley Village 390 N. Winchester Bivd. Santa Clara, CA 95050 petition the above Councils and ask that immediate improvements to be made to the existing crosswalk that crosses Winchester Blvd. / nearest Dolores Ave. / Kenwood Ave. Given that there has been an approved plan by both municipalities to make changes (i.e. a beacon light) to the above mentioned existing crosswalk with a proposed timeline start date of 2.5 years from the date of June 2023, both municipalities recognize that there are conditions that need significant improvements but this unfortunately does not sufficiently address the immediate needs of current residents and community alike.
Given that the crosswalk is directly serviced by a public bus route in each direction of Winchester Blvd at the crossing those who may rely upon public transport or who may simply want to cross the street are put in jeopardy. The crosswalk is not utilized as it is intended stemming from the fear of unsafe conditions, the incidence of speeding cars not adhering to the posted speed limit and the community knowledge of a pedestrian fatality at the crossing.
We ask that improved measures such as heightened painted visibility markers, increased signage, reflective markers, and improved enforcement of speed limits to be initiated immediately to improve conditions in the meantime before the many years long wait of a beacon crossing light is installed.
