Dear Mayor and Council Members,
Please avoid publishing a divisive resolution against divisiveness. I urge you to balance the proposed draft resolution for STATING SUPPORT FOR UNITED AGAINST HATE”.
Although the resolution looks like a compelling cause and balanced at first sight, the document illuminates the anti‐ Palestinian hate, while simultaneously ignoring the anti‐Zionism calls and propaganda for the annihilation of the State of Israel. Both Zionism and the Existence of Israel are Jewish ethnic core values.
This imbalance and favoritism of one side just supports and enhanc es the divide between ethnic groups in the community and their supporters.
You should either delete the words “anti‐Palestinian” or equally add anti‐Zionism and anti‐Israel.

Subject: A vote against a divisive and imbalanced resolution Hello all,
It has come to my attention that the council is considering an 'Anti‐hate' resolution on the upcoming city council meeting agenda. This resolution may sound harmless and peaceful, but at a closer inspection it is one sided, over simplified, and completely ignores the complexity and layers of challenge to this sensitive region over decades of conflict.
The call for ceasefire that is proposed here completely ignores the ceasefire that was in place until October 6th, the horrific acts of terror by Hamas that ignited the current conflict, including rape, muder, and kidnapping. It also ignores 135 hostages still
held by Hamas in horrifying conditions with no visits by the Red cross or access to medicine for over 70 days.
The call against hate is also painfully one sided. Clearly talking about anti‐Palestine hate, while not even mentioning the anti‐zionism calls frequently expressed by pro‐palestinians, and ignoring the anti‐jew hate despite the growing cases of
anti semitism we see and experience daily.
I urge you to remove this biased, misinformed, and divisive resolution from your agenda, or AT A MINIMUM, make it more balanced and inclusive to support both sides going through this horrible painful conflict. By keeping this as is, you are spreading misinformation, increasing friction in our beautiful community, and making the jewish population in the area feel unsafe in our homes.
Thank you
Michelle

Subject: Amend proposed proclamation
Esteemed Members of the Santa Clara City Council,
I appreciate the City’s commitment to fighting injustice and intolerance as outlined in the proposed petition against hate. I wish, however, to express my concern regarding the phrasing of the statement, specifically the inclusion of “anti-Palestinian” without a corresponding mention of “anti-Israeli” or “anti-Zionist.”
While I wholeheartedly support the commitment to stand against Islamophobia, Antisemitism, xenophobia, and other forms of hate (All Lives Mattering everyone, as it were), I believe that the omission of “anti-Israeli” or “anti-Zionist” in this context creates a big imbalance. It overlooks the experiences and concerns of those within our community who identify with or support the state of Israel.
Israel, as a sovereign nation-state, and Zionism, as a national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel, are integral to the identity of many Jewish residents in Santa Clara. The exclusion of anti-Israeli or anti-Zionist rhetoric from this statement is a tacit acceptance of such sentiments, which often intersect with Antisemitism.
In the interest of fairness and inclusivity, I propose the following amendment to the statement:
“That the City of Santa Clara does hereby commit to fighting injustice and intolerance, standing against anti-Palestinian, anti-Israeli, Islamophobic, Antisemitic, and xenophobic rhetoric and attacks, and hereby joins the United Against Hate campaign to further state our commitment in Santa Clara to build a community for all people regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, class, or other characteristics.” This amendment ensures that the City’s commitment to fighting injustice and intolerance is inclusive and representative of all communities within Santa Clara, including those who identify with or support Israel.
I trust that the City Council will consider this amendment in the spirit of fairness, equality, and the shared values that bind our diverse community.
Sincerely,
Sylvie Barak

Subject: Anti-hate resolution
Dear Santa Clara City Councillors and respected government officials,
I want to extend my sincere appreciation for your initiative in proposing the anti‐hate resolution on tonight's meeting agenda. Taking a stand against hate is so important fostering local unity.
Regarding the proposed anti‐hate resolution before you, its commitment to fighting injustice and intolerance, standing
against anti‐Palestinian, Islamophobic, anti‐Semitic, and xenophobic rhetoric and attacks is commendable. However, I would like to advocate for an all‐inclusive approach by incorporating language that also addresses anti‐Israel and anti‐ Zionist rhetoric.
Santa Clara is home to many Jews and Israelis,
a majority of whom embrace Zionism as part of our Jewish identity. Anti‐ Zionism is not a political position; it is a hateful one. Anti‐Zionism is not synonymous with what can be very legitimate criticisms of Israel and its politics and policies. Anti‐Zionism says Jewish people have no right to a homeland. It singles out Jews to call for the elimination of our state and strips us of our right to self‐determination. It also erases the horrific history of the Holocaust that preempted the establishment of Israel.
Anti‐Zionism is counter to the spirit of inclusivity you are trying to build with this resolution. It is hate, make no mistake, and it is prevalent all around us now.
I recognize the substantial pressure
you are currently facing to incorporate the ceasefire into this resolution. While the pursuit of peace is a shared aspiration, let me emphasize that calling for an Israeli ceasefire is not the same as calling for peace.
Peace requires both sides to give up fighting.
Israeli ceasefire isn’t the only path to deescalation; Hamas could return the many hostages still in their hands to show good faith, or even recognize the State of Israel, which they currently do not. Asking one side to lay down arms when the other side has blatantly declared that they will keep fighting until that side is erased asks the Jewish state to declare its own people are not worth protecting.
The Israel‐Hamas war is very important to members of our community and our whole world, but the matter of ceasefire is not the business of Santa Clara’s local government. I hope you will join your colleagues in Foster City, Berkeley, Marin, Los Altos, and other Bay Area towns in recognizing that such matters do not belong on the local agenda or in local resolutions.
I have confidence in your humility and professionalism in representing and ensuring the safety and inclusion of all Santa Clara residents. Your commitment to tolerance and focus on local issues will undoubtedly strengthen the impact of the resolution and promote unity in our diverse community.

Subject: Avoid divisive resolution
Dear Mayor and Council Members,
Please avoid publishing a divisive resolution against divisiveness. I believe such topics should not be discussed in a municipal level, and achieve little but increasing hate. Since you do plan to bring it forward, I urge you to balance the proposed draft resolution for STATING SUPPORT
FOR UNITED AGAINST HATE”.
This imbalance and favoritism of one side just supports and enhances the divide between ethnic groups in the community and their supporters. You should either delete the words “anti‐Palestinian” or equally add anti‐Zionism and anti‐Israel.
Personally, as a Jewish person in the Bay Area I'm
very concerned about the increase in hate against Jews and the denial of our history ("the holocaust is a myth" I hear from pro‐Palestinian groups) and of of Oct. 7 atrocities against Jews in Israel. Let's all work together to use the opportunity to unite our residents instead of dividing them.
Sincerely,
Naamah Argaman

Subject: Focus on Santa Clara Issues
Esteemed members of the Santa Clara City Council and fellow residents, My name is Ariel Shore and I come before you today with a simple yet fundamental message. The stance against hate, in all its forms, should be a given in our community. It's a basic principle that underpins the very fabric of our society.
While I fully support a 'united against hate' statement, I also want to remind us all of the primary role of our city council. Our meetings have recently been overshadowed by debates and discussions on global conflicts, particularly the Israeli/Palestinian one. These are not the core responsibilities of our local government.
Our city council should focus on the real and pressing issues that directly impact our daily lives here in Santa Clara. This includes managing our infrastructure, overseeing city activities, enhancing recreational opportunities, and ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all our residents. These are the areas where our focus, resources, and energies should be directed.
Our city council meetings should be a platform for addressing local civic issues, for making decisions that improve the quality of life for all Santa Clarans.
In conclusion, while I stand with the council in condemning hate in all its forms, I also urge us to redirect our attention back to the core functions of our city government. Let's work together to ensure that Santa Clara continues to thrive as a city that not only stands against hate but also proactively works towards the betterment of its citizens in tangible, everyday ways.
Thank you for your time and for your commitment to our city.

[You don't often get email from [email protected]. Learn why this is important at https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification ]
Esteemed members of the Santa Clara City Council and fellow residents,
I am Irit Eizips, and I stand before you today to raise a concern that significantly impacts the functionality and harmony of our community.
Once again, there is a coordinated effort by the Council on American‐Islamic Relations (CAIR) to "pack this council meeting for Palestine," which poses a challenge to the important work of our city's governance.
This aggressive hijacking of council business, involving the transportation of hundreds of individuals to deliberately prolong meetings
and divert attention from local issues, disrupts our civic process and deepens divisions within our community. The explicit targeting of the smaller Jewish population raises questions about the intentions and outcomes of such actions. How does this effectively address the needs and concerns of all Santa Clarans?
City council meetings
should serve as a platform for constructive dialogue and decision‐making on local matters, such as infrastructure, public safety, and community welfare. It is crucial to prioritize the real, fixable issues that cater to the needs of every member of our community. For instance, last week, an individual had to endure a two‐hour wait to inquire about repairing a swimming pool. This serves as an example of the legitimate city business that should receive the necessary attention.
I implore you to put an end to this disruptive activity and refocus our efforts on addressing the genuine concerns and interests of
our community. Let us work together towards finding effective solutions that benefit everyone.
Thank you for your attention and unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity of our civic processes.
Sincerely,
Irit Eizips

Subject: Please avoid a one sided, hateful, propaganda driven resolution Dear mayor and city council members,
The so‐called anti‐hate resolution that was proposed to be included in the agenda is anything but anti‐hate. This resolution is one sided, presenting Palestinians as the sole victims of this horrific and heat breaking conflict. It calls out against anti‐palastinian hate, but says nothing regarding anti semitism, or anti‐zionism.
Moving forward with this resolution, while ignoring the ceasefire that was in place until October 6th, and was terminated solely due to unimaginably violent acts of terror by Hamas, paints a distorted picture for our community, and between the lines even supports anti‐sematism.
If you truly care about the peace in our community, and safety of all of the people in it, please do not buy into the pressure sponsored by conflict seekers, and do not release a one sided, hateful resolution like this.
Calling for safety of palestinians without
calling for the return of 135 hostages still held captive ‐ is anti‐sematic Calling for a ceasefire without condemning the terror attacks of October 7th ‐ is anti‐sematic Mentioning anti‐palestinian hate without mentioning anti‐zionism ‐ is anti sematic.
Please protect all of your community, not just one side Thank
you

Subject: Please reject antisemitism and hate
Esteemed members of the Santa Clara City Council and fellow residents, My name is Moshe Malkin , and I am here today not only as a frequent visitor to this beloved city but also as a representative of its diverse community. I am heartened by the council's decision to consider a 'united against hate' statement. This initiative is a crucial step towards reinforcing the values that define us as a community.
In recent times, we have seen a disturbing rise in acts of hatred and intolerance. The Jewish community, of which I am a proud member, has experienced a 377% increase in Antisemitic incidents, according to recent FBI reports. This is not just a number; it represents a growing sense of fear and vulnerability among our people. This hatred is affecting the well being of our children, our families, and our elders.
As we stand united against hate, we must remember that our strength lies in our diversity. Santa Clara is a tapestry woven from many threads – each thread representing a different culture, belief, and perspective. When one thread is threatened, the entire tapestry is at risk. It is our collective responsibility to protect and cherish this diversity.
The role of the city council is not to engage in global politics, but to ensure the safety, dignity, and respect of all its citizens. We must rise above the divisions that global conflicts can create in our local community and focus on what unites us – our shared humanity and our common values.
In conclusion, I urge the council to adopt a 'united against hate' statement that encompasses all forms of hatred and bigotry, including both anti-Israeli and anti-Palestinian hate, antisemitism and Islamophobia. Let us commit to fostering a community where every individual, regardless of their background, can feel safe, respected, and valued.
Thank you for your leadership and for your dedication to making Santa Clara a beacon of hope, tolerance, and unity.”

Dear Mayor and Council Members,
Please avoid publishing a divisive resolution against divisiveness. I urge you to balance the proposed draft resolution for STATING SUPPORT FOR UNITED AGAINST HATE”.
Although the resolution looks like a
compelling cause and balanced at first sight, the document illuminates the anti‐ Palestinian hate, while simultaneously ignoring the anti‐Zionism calls and propaganda for the annihilation of the State of Israel. Both Zionism and the Existence of Israel are Jewish ethnic core values.
This imbalance and favoritism of one side
just supports and enhances the divide between ethnic groups in the community and their supporters.
You should either delete the words “anti‐Palestinian” or equally add anti‐Zionism and anti‐Israel.
Sincerely,

Please, add an amendment to the proposed Anti-Hate Resolution for 12/19/23 and stand firm against a ceasefire!
Dear Santa Clara Mayor Gillmor, City Councils and respected government officials, I trust this message finds you well. I want to extend my sincere appreciation for your initiative in proposing the anti-hate resolution on tonight's meeting agenda. It is indeed a crucial step towards fostering unity and standing against various forms of hatred.
Regarding the proposed anti-hate resolution, its commitment to fighting injustice and intolerance, standing against anti-Palestinian, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, and xenophobic rhetoric and attacks is commendable.
However, I would like to advocate for an all-inclusive approach by adding an amendment and incorporating language that also addresses anti-Israel and anti-Zionist rhetoric. Santa Clara is home to many Jews and Israelis, a majority of whom embrace the belief in Zionism as a fundamental right to their homeland.
I also recognize the substantial pressure you are currently facing to incorporate the ceasefire into this resolution. While the pursuit of peace is a shared aspiration, let me highlight a few reasons against this particular passage:
* Recent ceasefires, unfortunately, have not yielded the expected peace, with Hamas persistently launching rockets, endangering both Israeli and Palestinian lives. * Notably, it is Hamas, not Israel, hindering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The confiscation of food and medications from Gazan citizens by Hamas underscores the importance of acknowledging diverse perspectives, particularly those of Gazans themselves.
* Our local community is grappling with a concerning surge in anti-Semitism and division. I implore your assistance and protection in developing strategies to address this trend and foster unity among our residents. * There exists a misconception about tax money funding the conflict. It's crucial to clarify that local taxes support our local government, emphasizing the need to prioritize and address local issues.
I have confidence in your humility and professionalism in representing and ensuring the safety of all Santa Clara residents. Your commitment to inclusivity and focus on local issues will undoubtedly strengthen the impact of the resolution and promote unity in our diverse community.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Vladlena Gulchin

Subject: Public Comment for the meeting on 12/19
Dear Esteemed members of the Santa Clara City Council,
My name is Olga Eidelman, and I'm a Santa Clara resident of 15 years.
The last meeting was highjacked by CAIR, which has been urging residents across the Bay Area, including Santa Clara, to attend city council meetings. Their aim is to advocate for the inclusion of a ceasefire resolution in solidarity with the Palestinian people. While advocating for international issues is a right in our society, the manner in which these meetings are being approached is concerning.
The amount of lies, disinformation, and pressure on the council was alarming. Moreover, the calls to pass the "ceasefire" resolution had nothing to do with the business of the city, and people with more important comments related to the agenda were forced to stay in the gallery past midnight. This was absolutely unnecessary as the Council should be focused on the matters pertaining to the City.
While I welcome the "United Against Hate" resolution, please change the wording of paragraph #2 in the resolution:
“That the City of Santa Clara does hereby commit to fighting injustice and intolerance, standing against anti-Palestinian, Islamophobic, Antisemitic, and xenophobic rhetoric and attacks, and hereby joins the United Against Hate campaign to further state our commitment in Santa Clara to build a community for all people regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, class, or other characteristics.” If you are going to include the "Anti-Palestinian" in the paragraph, balance it out with “anti-Israeli” or “anti-Zionist.” Otherwise, the rhetoric in this context creates an imbalance. It inadvertently overlooks the experiences and concerns of those within our community who identify with or support the state of Israel.
Your voter and supporter,

Subject: PUBLIC COMMENT: Please amend United Against Hate resolution to include anti-Israeli hate Dear Council,
I'm in full support that our community should be diverse and respectful and I stand for peace.
I agree with most of the statement but was disappointed to see that the city stands "against anti‐Palestinian, Islamophobic, Antisemetic...". Why do you stand only with anti‐palestinian but not anti ‐Israeli hare?
This is not balanced and seems like taking a stand with one side of a complex conflict. Israeli residents are afraid to speak Hebrew on the streets, and Isrseli kids are bullied at school because of the false narrative that Israel is committing genocide.
Please consider to do one of the following:
1. Remove "anti palestinian" from the resolution.
2. Add "anti Israeli" so the resolution states clearly that we do not support anti‐israeli hare.
Thank you,
Ido Josef.
An Israeli‐American resident.

The city of Santa Clara is a great city, keep it this way for all citizens and avoid getting involved in a conflict abroad.
Please remember that there was a ceasefire in place on October 6th, and if Hamas were to release all hostages and lay down their weapons, there would be a permanent ceasefire.

Subject: Request for Amendment to the Proposed Petition Against Injustice and Intolerance To the Esteemed Members of the Santa Clara ,
I, the undersigned resident of Santa Clara, appreciate the City’s commitment to fighting injustice and intolerance as outlined in the recent petition. However, we wish to express our concern regarding the phrasing of the statement, specifically the inclusion of “anti-Palestinian” without a corresponding mention of “anti-Israeli” or “anti-Zionist.”
The current phrasing of the statement:
“That the City of Santa Clara does hereby commit to fighting injustice and intolerance, standing against anti-Palestinian, Islamophobic, Antisemitic, and xenophobic rhetoric and attacks, and hereby joins the United Against Hate campaign to further state our commitment in Santa Clara to build a community for all people regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, class, or other characteristics.” While we wholeheartedly support the commitment to stand against Islamophobia, Antisemitism, xenophobia, and other forms of hate, we believe that the omission of “anti-Israeli” or “anti-Zionist” rhetoric in this context creates an imbalance. It inadvertently overlooks the experiences and concerns of those within our community who identify with or support the state of Israel.
In the interest of fairness and inclusivity, we propose the following amendment to the statement:
We trust that the City Council will consider this amendment in the spirit of fairness, equality, and the shared values that bind our diverse community.
Sincerely,
Eugenia Segal

Subject: Say No to the United Against Hate resolution
Hello! My name is Karen Enfield. As a 20 year resident of San Jose, I am writing to you in solidarity with the Santa Clara Jewish community, and by extension, all peace aspiring peoples everywhere.
I am principally against local politics inserting itself in international affairs, which is what this resolution against hate is really about. If a resolution is adopted, anti-Israel and Anti-Zionism must also be included under the categories against hate and I would like to explain why.
Firstly, it is the wise policy of San Jose to not be involved with international affairs and I would like to see such a proposal enacted for Santa Clara City as well, so that local councils are not taken away from their main purpose of addressing local issues which makes perfect sense.
If a resolution against hate is to be discussed, then in light of the overwhelming percentage of hate crimes directed against Jews in America that is skyrocketing, that by far eclipse any other group, any local resolution adopted against hate would be morally bankrupt if it didn’t include hate directed against Jews, Israelis, and “Zionists”, which the overwhelming majority of Jewish people are. “Zionist” should not be a pejorative, but understand that it is increasingly being used to vilify any perceived supporter of Israel, not just Jews, and thus non-Jews such as Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Bahai, Persians, Israeli Arabs, and others who are perceived as supporting or as benefitting from the existence of a Jewish state are open for being targets of hate. Thus anti-Zionism should be part of what is also united against hate. And while Israelis are primarily Jewish, Israelis also include Christians, Bahai, Bedouin’s, Druze, and Arab Muslims many of whom who serve proudly and voluntarily in the IDF and are also against Hamas, and they should not be targets of hate either for being in defense of their country, Israel.
“Zionism” is a belief that the state of Israel should exist as a homeland for the Jewish people as a matter of equal and human rights, and Jewish continuity. Many people who are not Jewish support Israel and Zionism due to the many scientific and humanitarian contributions ordinary Jews and Israel have made to the the world, and regard it as a civilized and moral country in the family of nations. Israel also provides a safe haven to flee persecution that Jews have historically experienced by people who wish to subjugate them, erase their identity, or wipe them out, both historically and up until this very day.
Thank you for your time and service to the members of the community.

Subject: Today's City Hall Meeting - A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA STATING
SUPPORT FOR UNITED AGAINST HATE
Dear Mayor and City Council, seasons greetings.
I’ve been a happy resident of Santa Clara since 2008. I made it my home. From the amazing Central Park Library, the Triton Museum, to our amazing Fire Department that cares for us better and in more ways than the FDs of the neighboring cities.
Since the brutal, inhuman, sadistic beyond your worst nightmare attack on Israel on October 7th, things changed. A lot! Santa Clara suddenly doesn’t feel as safe and welcoming as it has been. I even took the CERT course and got certified. Yes, it’s scary to see and experience all the hate; more so when its foundation is based on fabrication and selective trues. Please don’t feed the hate monster.
I urge and beg you to avoid publishing a divisive biased resolution. I urge you to balance the proposed draft resolution for STATING SUPPORT FOR UNITED AGAINST HATE”.
Although the resolution looks like a compelling cause and balanced at first sight, the document is single mindedly calls out anti‐Palestinian sentiments, while simultaneously ignoring the anti‐Zionism calls and propaganda for the annihilation of the State of Israel. Both Zionism and the Existence of Israel are Jewish ethnic core values.
This imbalance and favoritism of one side just supports and enhances the divide between ethnic groups in the community. As an American citizen and a proud Jew, I find this inconceivable. If the City of Santa Clara must (it doesn’t) engage is international affairs, it should do so carefully, respectfully, and show compassion to all pain and suffering. If nothing else works, I’d suggest either delete the words “anti‐Palestinian” or equally add anti‐Zionism and anti‐Israel.
Please consider not bringing up again the topic of a ceasefire in Gaza at all. Why tear Santa Clara apart over a conflict abroad? Family members of Santa Clara residents may well be fighting each other in Gaza/Israel. Do we need to bring the conflict here?
Please remember that there was a ceasefire in place on October 6th, and if Hamas were to release all hostages and lay down their weapons, there would be a permanent ceasefire. Hamas chose to break the ceasefire and still holds over 100 innocent citizens hostages, including 11‐month‐old baby.
Yours very truly,
‐yael
