Draft Proclamation
City of SantaClara
WHEREAS, on November 13, 2012, the Santa Clara City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1899 to protect and safeguard the right and opportunity of all persons to be free from all forms of arbitrary discrimination, including discrimination based on age, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation; and
WHEREAS, on March 23, 2021, the Santa Clara City Council adopted Resolution 21-8953 affirming the City of Santa Clara’s commitment to stand against and condemn violence and hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders; the City stands in solidarity with the Asian Pacific American community in condemning anti-Asian sentiment and any acts of racism throughout the region and the nation; and
WHEREAS, Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is recognized each May to celebrate and pay tribute to the cont ributions made to the history of the United States by generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, the first Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month was designated by presidential proclamation and in 1992, Congress permanently designated May of each year as a monthlong celebration that is now known as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, this year’s theme, Advancing Leaders Through Innovation, pays homage to the visionaries who shaped AAPI history and continue to influence the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, LISA M. GILLMOR , by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor, and on behalf of the City of Santa Clara and the entire City Council, proclaim May 2024 as
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
in the City of Santa Clara, and encourage all citizens to observe this month by learning more about the rich history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and their significant contributions to our nation’s history.
