WHEREAS, parks and recreation are an integral part of communities throughout the country, including the City of Santa Clara, and the U.S. House of Representatives has designated July as Parks & Recreation Month; and WHEREAS, parks and recreation promote health and wellness by improving the physical and mental health of people who live near and use parks by providing parkland and recreational facilities that enable active lifestyles, non-competitive and competitive team sports, and time spent in nature; and WHEREAS, parks and recreation facilities, programs and services support the positive development of children through supervised after school programs, summer camps, arts and theater, instructional sports, social and cultural activities, led by professional adult role models; and WHEREAS, parks and recreation facilities, programs and services engage persons of all ages and abilities including seniors and persons with special needs, connecting individuals with community resources, nature and the outdoors, improving their quality of life; and WHEREAS, parks and recreation is a leading community provider of healthy meals, nutrition services, community gardens, and environmental education; and WHEREAS, parks and recreation increases a community’s economic prosperity through increased property values, attraction and retention of businesses, and reduction of crime; and WHEREAS, parks and recreation is a growing and adaptable green infrastructure, providing a natural habitat for plants and animals, that make our communities resilient in the face of natural disasters and climate change; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clara recognizes the benefits derived from parks and recreation resources, and that together they create a place of community “Where You Belong!” NOW, THEREFORE, I, LISA M. GILLMOR, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor, and on behalf of the Santa Clara City Council, do hereby proclaim July 2024 as
PARKS & RECREATION MONTH
in the City of Santa Clara, and urge all residents to enjoy our parks, trails, open space, recreational programs and facilities.
