Edalina Bettencourt Vargas To be read by Mayor Gillmor
• Edalina "Lina" Bettencourt Vargas passed away on September 1, 2024 at the age of 91.
She leaves behind a wide circle of family and friends.
• Edalina was born in June 1933 in Ribeira do Cabo, Pico, Azores, Portugal, to her beloved parents, the late Jose and Maria Bettencourt.
• She was the cherished wife of Mateus R. Vargas, with whom she shared nearly 70 years of marriage. Together, they built a loving and devoted family in Santa Clara. Edalina was the proud mother of her daughter, Ana Vargas-Smith, and son-in-law, Darry Smith. • Edalina and Mateus were active community members of the SES, St. Anthony, and Nossa Senhora de Fatima organizations, and they belonged to St. Clare's Parish. • Edalina adored her brothers and sisters, extended family, nieces, nephews, cousins, lifelong friends and neighbors-many of whom have already passed but remained close to her heart. She often returned to Pico, Azores, with her family to spend summers reconnecting with extended family and friends, and cherishing her roots. • Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed.
