City of SantaClara

WHEREAS, the month of March was first officially recognized as Women’s History Month by Congress in 1987, having been expanded from Women’s History Week. The month recognizes, honors, and celebrates the struggles and achievements of American women throughout the history of the United States to gain rights for themselves and many other underrepresented and disenfranchised groups; and

WHEREAS, women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist, emancipation, industrial labor, and civil rights movements, creating a more fair and just society for all; and

WHEREAS, the 2026 theme for Women's History Month is "Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.” This theme honors women who are driving sustainable transformation across environmental, economic, and social sectors, creating a more equitable future.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, LISA M. GILLMOR, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor, and on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2026 as
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

in the City of Santa Clara, and encourage residents to celebrate with programs, ceremonies, and activities and to recognize the contributions of women in their lives.

Given under my hand and the Seal of the City of Santa Clara, California, this 10th day of March 2026.
