Proclamation
WHEREAS, dedicated public works professionals are responsible for providing vital infrastructure, facilities and services that help create safe, sustainable and resilient communities; and
WHEREAS, working together with various departments and the community, the Department of Public Works helps rebuild, protect, and improve our city’s transportation infrastructure, landscape maintenance, water and solid waste systems, parks and recreation spaces, power, emergency management and first response, right-of-way management, and maintenance of public buildings, among other things; and WHEREAS, since 1960 the American Public Works Association (APWA) has sponsored National Public Works Week (NPWW) to celebrate the important role that Public Works plays in planning, building, managing, and operating at the heart of local communities ; and WHEREAS, the 2026 NPWW theme of “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community” highlights the deeply rooted service-oriented reputation of public works professionals whose everyday efforts, both big and small, form the foundation of thriving communities .
NOW, THEREFORE, I, LISA M. GILLMOR, by virtue of the authority, vested in me as Mayor, and on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim the week of May 17-23, 2026, as
NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK
in the City of Santa Clara and do hereby urge all citizens to recognize our public works staff for the substantial contributions they make to our city and community.
