City of SantaClara
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October 1981, which was established to connect advocates nationwide in their efforts to end domestic violence, and in 1989, Congress formally recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which continues to be observed in communities across the nation; and WHEREAS, domestic violence can have devastating consequences that extend across generations and throughout a lifetime, violating an individual’s privacy, dignity, security, and well-being through patterns of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse or control; and
WHEREAS, this year’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month theme, “#Every1KnowsSome1,” highlights the widespread impact of domestic violence and reminds us that it can affect anyone in our families, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clara joins communities and organizations nationwide in increasing public awareness of domestic violence and supporting prevention, education, and resources for those impacted, while recognizing the courage and leadership of survivors who have helped advance efforts to foster safety, equality, healing, and hope in our homes and communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, LISA M. GILLMOR, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor, and on behalf of the City of Santa Clara, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2026, as

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
