BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita (City) has been awarded a grant in the amount of $23,677 by the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program. Justice Assistance Grant funds are allocated by using a formula based on each city’s share of the total violent crimes reported within the state.

This program allows state and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and respond to crime, based on local needs and conditions. The JAG program provides agencies with the flexibility to prioritize and place JAG funds where they are needed most.

The JAG 2023 grant funds will be used for the purchase of technologically-advanced equipment to enhance existing law enforcement, advance community policing efforts to help reduce crime, address quality-of-life issues, and safeguard public safety in the City.

Funds will be allocated towards a range of essential purchases aimed at enhancing traffic safety and enforcement, investigative equipment, off-road enforcement, and safety gear. Specifically, these items will include rifle mounts, assault medic bags, speed radar guns, tracking devices, tire repair materials, and off-road vehicle equipment. These investments will strengthen the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station technological capabilities, ensuring that operations become more efficient and effective overall.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION

FISCAL IMPACT

Upon approval of the recommended actions, $23,677 will be available in expenditure account 2066106-511101 and offset by the increase in revenue account 206-446124 (BJA Law Enforcement Grant).
