OF SANTA CLARITA AS A CLEAN CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY
DEPARTMENT: Neighborhood Services
PRESENTER: Darin Seegmiller
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution supporting the designation of the City of Santa Clarita as a Clean California Community.
BACKGROUND
The Clean California Community designation is a statewide program implemented by the California Department of Transportation in August 2024. Its purpose is to establish, recognize, and reward communities that demonstrate pride in keeping their environment clean, beautiful, and litter-free.
Communities that sign the Clean California Community pledge demonstrate commitment to maintaining a clean, green, and vibrant community for the well-being of all residents. Following this, the program criteria must be met within a year from the pledge's signing date. Criteria include the following categories:
• Organizing community cleanups
• Measuring cleanup progress
• Providing community and youth education
• Maintaining trash collection infrastructure
• Increasing greenspace and beautification
• Establishing collection drives and stakeholder partnerships
The City of Santa Clarita (City) currently meets the majority of the criteria, and it is anticipated that the City will meet the minimum requirements for the designation by June 2025.
In addition to officially promoting the City as a Clean California Community committed to a zero-litter goal, this designation benefits the City by allowing it to be recognized on state websites and social media posts, state-partnered media outreach, and priority access to national grant opportunities, educational materials, and volunteer cleanup kits. Other cities that have signed the pledge include Bakersfield, Fresno, Hawthorne, Irvine, Palmdale, Riverside, San Jose, and San Leandro.
Staff recommends adopting a resolution supporting the designation of the City of Santa Clarita as a Clean California Community.
