FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF MAY 17, 2022

COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
TO: City Council
FROM: City Manager
Prepared by: Interim Director of Public Works
SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING "NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK" RECOMMENDATION:

That the City Council recognize May 15-21, 2022, as "National Public Works Week" in the City of Santa Maria.

BACKGROUND:

President John F. Kennedy proclaimed National Public Works Week as an annual reminder of the many ways public works contribute to the quality of life. Public works professionals include those who manage water, sewer, public transportation, and refuse removal systems, as well as those responsible for maintaining public buildings and grounds. They are, in short, the people who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community's health, safety, and comfort. In Santa Maria, the Public Works and Utilities Departments provide the production and delivery of clean water; wastewater collection and treatment; stormwater collection, treatment, and control; solid waste collection and disposal; streets and highways; public transit; public buildings; and fleet services.

For many years, public works professionals across North America have applauded and shared the accomplishments of those in their profession. During this celebration, professionals take part in events and activities to increase public awareness of, and appreciation for, the public works profession.

DISCUSSION:

The American Public Works Association (APWA) sponsors "National Public Works Week," which is being observed this year from May 15-21, 2022. Since public works projects are vital to the growth and quality of life in any community, this year's theme "Ready and Resilient" promotes the efforts of the public works professionals. The City of Santa Maria is a charter member of the Central Coast Chapter of the APWA. The Santa Maria City Council has long supported the public works profession.
