WHEREAS, recreation and parks programs and facilities are an integral part of life in the City of Santa Maria and fundamental to the environmental well-being of the community; and
WHEREAS, recreation and parks promote health and wellness, improving the physical and mental health of people who live near parks; and
WHEREAS, recreation and parks promote time spent in nature, which positively impacts mental health by increasing cognitive performance and well-being and alleviating illnesses, such as depression, attention -deficit disorders, and Alzheimer's; and WHEREAS, recreation and parks encourage physical activities by providing space for popular sports, hiking trails, swimming, and many other activities designed to promote active lifestyles; and
WHEREAS, recreation and parks programming and education activities are focused on youth and adult programs such as sports, art, wellness, and mentorship programs; and WHEREAS, recreation and parks increase a community's economic prosperity through increased property values, expansion of the local tax base, increased tourism, the attraction and retention of businesses, and crime reduction; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. House of Representatives has designated July as Recreation and Parks Month; and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Maria recognizes the benefits derived from recreation and parks resources.
NOW, THEREFORE I, ALICE M. PATINO, Mayor of the City of Santa Maria hereby recognize July 1 through July 31, 2022, as
"RECREATIONAND PARKS MONTH"
in the City of Santa Maria, and encourage residents and businesses to partake in recreation and parks activities and enjoy the array of opportunities within the City's parks, facilities, and recreation programs.
