FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 15, 2022

COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
TO: City Council
FROM: City Manager
Prepared by: Chief Deputy City Clerk
SUBJECT: BUSINESSES OF THE MONTH — NOVEMBER 2022
RECOMMENDATION:

That the Mayor and City Council present a certificate to the featured Businesses for November 2022 — Abbey Carpet & Floor of Santa Maria, and Santa Maria Style BBQ Outfitters.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Santa Maria and the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce have partnered to highlight different businesses in the City through a Business of the Month Program. This Program gives recognition to businesses that have been in the community for a significant amount of time, and/or provide unique or significant contributions to the community. Not only does this give valuable exposure to these local businesses, but it also reminds the community of the unique, diverse, and long-standing businesses they are fortunate to have in Santa Maria.

This month's women -owned business is Abbey Carpet & Floor of Santa Maria, owned by Johanne Corteguera (pronounced Jo-anna Cort-a-gera). Abbey Carpet, located at 2051 South Broadway in Santa Maria, employs 12 staff and provides installation and materials for all flooring needs. They were established in 1993 in Santa Maria, and support the community offering discounts for veterans, active military personnel, and first responders.

The manufacturing company is Santa Maria BBQ Outfitters, located at 2936 Industrial Parkway, is owned by the Caicco (pronounced Ka-ee-ko) family. Grandfather John Caicco and his son made BBQs at the family ranch in Tepusquet Canyon in the 1970s and would sell them to stores along Broadway. The business began in 1985 and today employs 12 staff and supports the community with donations to local organizations' fundraising efforts. Santa Maria BBQ Outfitters also supplies 58 Costcos, 2 BBQ Land Restaurants, and 9 Ace Hardware stores.
