FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF JANUARY 17, 2023
COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
TO: City Council
FROM: City Manager
Prepared by: Chief Deputy City Clerk
SUBJECT: BUSINESSES OF THE MONTH — JANUARY 2023
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Mayor and City Council present a certificate to the featured businesses for January 2023 — A.T. Still University and the Historic Santa Maria Inn.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Santa Maria and the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce have partnered to highlight different businesses in the City through a Business of the Month Program. For the next year, this program gives recognition to local businesses for their longevity and/or for providing significant healthcare contributions. Not only does this give valuable exposure to these local businesses, but it also reminds the community of the unique, diverse, and long-standing businesses they are fortunate to have in Santa Maria.
This month's long-standing business is the Historic Santa Maria Inn, owned by the Hearns and Hollingsead families. The Inn employs 54 full-time employees and 48 part-time employees. Located at 801 S. Broadway in Santa Maria, the business first opened its doors in 1917 with proprietor Fran J. McCoy. It sold in 1999 to the present-day owners.
The Historic Santa Maria Inn has provided unique accommodations to Santa Maria Valley travelers for over 100 years.
This month's business being recognized for its contributions to the community is A.T. Still University which provides Physician Assistant education for healthcare providers focused on underserved communities. The University employs 22 full-time employees. Its Santa Maria campus launched in 2021 at 1075 Betteravia Road, matriculating 90 students in its inaugural class. Dr. Craig M. Phelps is the current University President. The original campus was founded in 1892 in Missouri and continues to operate there, as well as in Arizona and California.
