SMOOTH has been serving the Santa Maria Valley since 1974. We started with a group of volunteers who seen the need to keep seniors in their home and out of senior living facilities, while being able to have safe transportation. And from that our Senior Dial-A-Ride service was born.
Our Senior Dial A Ride Service is vital to our local community. We provide timely curb to curb transportation to seniors in the Santa Maria area. Our Service runs Monday through Friday from 9A.M. – 4P.M. We schedule for a variety of destinations including medically related appointments, grocery shopping trips, senior centers, as well as many other places.
Many of our clients live alone and often the interaction with our drivers or dispatch is the only interaction they have. Many of our clients do not meet ADA guidelines and SMOOTH is their only source of transportation. Without SMOOTH, they would not be able to get to their destinations, including life sustaining Dialysis appointments. When our clients have to give up their Drivers License, SMOOTH helps to ease the transition, when they may be feeling they are losing their independence.
Securing any amount of this grant would allow us to expand on our Senior Dial A Ride service. Our rides continue to be $2 each way, and we have not increased the cost in many years. We understand that many of our clients are on a fixed income and doing so would be to their disadvantage. The senior dial a ride service is supported by excess SMOOTH funds, public funds, donations, and grants that we are able to secure. The current economic environment continues to make it more challenging which is why this grant is so important.
