FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF MAY 16, 2023
COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
TO: City Council
FROM: City Manager
Prepared by: Director of Public Works
SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING "NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK" RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council recognizes May 21 through May 27, 2023, as "National Public Works Week" in the City of Santa Maria.
BACKGROUND:
President John F. Kennedy proclaimed National Public Works Week as an annual reminder of the many ways public works contribute to the quality of life. Public Works professionals include those who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community's health, safety, and comfort. In Santa Maria, the Public Works and Utilities Departments provide the production and delivery of clean water; wastewater collection and treatment; stormwater collection, treatment, and control, solid waste collection and disposal, streets and highways, public transit, public buildings, and fleet services.
For many years, public works professionals across North America have applauded and shared the accomplishments of those in their profession. During this celebration, professionals take part in events and activities to increase public awareness of, and appreciation for, the public works profession.
DISCUSSION:
The American Public Works Association (APWA) sponsors "National Public Works Week," which is being observed this year from May 21 through 27, 2023. Since public works projects are vital to the growth and quality of life in any community, this year's theme "Connecting the World Through Public Works," promotes the efforts of public works professionals. The City of Santa Maria is a charter member of the Central Coast Chapter of the APWA. The Santa Maria City Council has long supported the public works profession.
