FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF JUNE 20, 2023

COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT

TO: City Council

FROM: City Manager
Prepared by: Director of Recreation and Parks

SUBJECT: Proclamation – Recreation and Parks Month, July 2023

Present a Proclamation recognizing July 2023 as Recreation and Parks Month in the City of Santa Maria.

BACKGROUND:

Since 1985, Americans have commemorated Recreation and Parks Month in July aiming to foster robust, healthy, and resilient communities by harnessing the potential of recreation and parks. This month also serves as a tribute to the dedicated efforts of over 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals, in addition to the countless part-time, seasonal workers, and volunteers. Their unwavering commitment ensures the upkeep of the nation's local, state, and community parks.

DISCUSSION:

The City observes "Recreation and Parks Month" as a means to appreciate the invaluable role of recreation and leisure services in fostering a united community. Extensive research has demonstrated that the social advantages of recreation play a pivotal role in cultivating a society characterized by pride and self-sufficiency. By offering parks, open spaces, and safeguarded natural environments, recreation actively contributes to the environmental well-being of our community. Moreover, studies have highlighted the economic merits of investing in parks and recreation services, including improved health outcomes, incentives for business growth and relocation, and a notable reduction in the costly ramifications of vandalism and criminal activities.
