Proclamation
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Maria recognizes the importance of Literacy and English language proficiency as vital to the social and economic development of all its residents; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the non -profit, Central Coast Literacy Council is “Empowering Lives Through English Literacy”; and
WHEREAS, the Central Coast Literacy Council provides free literacy services to residents and their families to develop and grow the skills to enter the workforce, volunteer, become involved with children’s education, progress their educational goals and upward mobility in their place of work; and
WHEREAS, the Central Coast Literacy Council will promote National Literacy Month in September by encouraging all residents to visit the Santa Maria Public Library and explore new worlds;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ALICE M. PATINO, Mayor of the City of Santa Maria hereby proclaim September 2023 as
“Literacy Awareness Month”
in the City of Santa Maria, and encourage all Santa Marians to help increase literacy awareness, volunteer as a literacy tutor, or become a learner of the Central Coast Literacy Council.
