SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Literacy Awareness Month”
Present a Proclamation recognizing the month of September 2023 as “Literacy Awareness Month” in the City of Santa Maria and encourage all Santa Marians to help increase literacy awareness, volunteer as a literacy tutor, or become a learner of the Central Coast Literacy Council.
BACKGROUND:
In our knowledge-based society, literacy and English language proficiency are vital to the social and economic development of all residents. The City has a partnership with the non-profit Central Coast Literacy Council, headquartered in the Public Library. The organization offers free English literacy training to residents and their families.
