FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF OCTOBER 3, 2023
COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
TO: City Council
FROM: City Manager
Prepared by: Director of Community Development
SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week”
Present a Proclamation to recognize October 9 th through 13th, 2023 , as “Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week” to recognize and celebrate the role Code Enforcement Officers have in our communities.
BACKGROUND:
In September 2018, the California State Legislature designated the second week of October as Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week. Since then, jurisdictions have been encouraged to work with their local government to approve a Proclamation establishing the second week of October as Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week to honor the efforts of Code Enforcement Teams throughout the State.
DISCUSSION:
The City of Santa Maria’s Code Enforcement Division is currently made up of a Code Enforcement Ma nager and a Supervisor who led a team of three Code Enforcement Officers and one Technician. Collectively the team assists with a variety of issues including building, zoning, housing, animal control, environmental, and health and safety violations. The te am strives to assist the City in the prevention of neighborhood deterioration, as well as ensuring safety for both residents and businesses. Code Enforcement Officers have a highly visible role in the community as they serve and regularly interact with the public and a variety of Federal, State, County, and Local Officials. The positive and proactive role that Code Enforcement Officers play should be recognized, and therefore, it is recommended that the City Council recognizes the October 9th through 13th, 2023, as “Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week” in the City of Santa Maria
