FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF NOVEMBER 21, 2023

COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT

TO: City Council

FROM: Interim City Manager Alex Posada
Prepared by: Chief Deputy City Clerk Sarah Lansburgh

SUBJECT: Cancellation of the January 2, 2024, City Council Meeting

Description:

The City Council will consider the cancellation of the first regular City Council meeting in January 2024 due to its proximity to the New Year holiday.

RECOMMENDATION:

Cancel the regularly scheduled Council meeting of January 2, 2024, due to the New Year holiday.

BACKGROUND:

Section 2-1.01 of the Santa Maria Municipal Code sets the time, day, and place for holding City Council meetings to discuss items of City business. The City Council has the authority to cancel meetings due to a lack of quorum or lack of business items.

DISCUSSION:

The City Council meets twice a month on the first and third Tuesdays. In 2024, the first regular meeting in January is scheduled on Tuesday, January 2 nd. Due to the proximity to the New Year holiday, there exists a potential for scheduling conflicts for Council, City staff, as well as members of the public, due to the vacation plans and scheduled City Hall holiday closure. Cancellation of the January 2, 2024, City Council meeting will avoid these conflicts. Council may address any items that arise between the December 19, 2023 , regular meeting through the new year at the January 16, 2024, meeting.

Alternative(s)
1) Do not cancel the January 2 nd meeting and take no further action; 2) Reschedule th e January 2nd meeting to a different date; or 3) Provide other direction to staff.

Fiscal Considerations
There is minimal cost savings due to reduced staff time associated with agenda and meeting preparation.

2 Impact to the Community
While the public will not have the ability to bring concerns to the City Council on January 2, 2024, Councilmembers and staff remain available by email or telephone to address resident concerns during the regular business days prior to the holiday and thereafter.
