FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF APRIL 2, 2024
COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
TO: City Council
FROM: Interim City Manager Alex Posada
SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Donate Life Month” – April 2024
The City Council will recognize the month of April as “Donate Life Month” in the City of Santa Maria, and encourage all Santa Maria residents to check “YES!” to donate their organs when applying for or renewing their driver’s license.
BACKGROUND:
Currently, more than 103,720 individuals nationwide and 23,000 in California are on the organ transplant waiting list. On average, 17 people die each day due to the shortage of donated organs.
A single individual’s donation of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and small intestine can save up to eight lives. Tissue donations can heal more than 75 others and a single blood donation can help three individuals in need.
This Proclamation was requested to create awareness of the need for donors and the opportunities for Santa Maria residents to donate when applying for or renewing their driver’s licenses or Identification cards at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Scott Burns, local kidney donation recipient, will be accepting the Proclamation.
