SUBJECT: Proclamation – “National Sexual Assault Awareness Month” -April 2024
Present a Proclamation recognizing the month of April 2024, as “National Sexual Assault Awareness Month” in the City of Santa Maria
BACKGROUND:
National Sexual Assault Awareness Month is designated as an annual effort to increase public awareness and education about sexual assault, aiming to prevent sexual violence across all communities. It highlights the unfortunate reality that sexual violence affects individuals regardless of racial, cultural, or economic backgrounds, with more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime.
A coalition, including the North County Rape Crisis and Child Protection Center, law enforcement, churches, healthcare providers, and community volunteers, is actively working to address this crisis.
This proclamation is being brought forth to increase education, awareness, and community involvement as essential steps towards prevention in efforts to eradicate sexual violence from the community . It commends the dedication of those working towards these goals and acknowledges the challenges faced by victims/survivors and their networks.
