BACKGROUND:
President John F. Kennedy proclaimed “National Public Works Week ” as an annual reminder of the many ways public works contribute to the quality of life. Public Works professionals include those who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community’s health, safety, and comfort. In Santa Maria, the Public Works and Utilities Departments provide the production and delivery of clean water; wastewater collection and treatment; stormwater collection, treatment, and control, solid waste collection and disposal, streets and highways, public transit, public buildings, and fleet services.
For many years, public works professionals across North America have applauded and shared the accomplishments of those in their profession. During this celebration, professionals take part in events and activities to increase pu blic awareness of, and appreciation for, the public works profession.
DISCUSSION:
The American Public Works Association (APWA) sponsors “National Public Works Week,” which is being observed this year from May 19th through 25th, 2024. Since public works projects are vital to the growth and quality of life in any community, this year's theme “Advancing Quality of Life for All," promotes the efforts of public works professionals. The City of Santa Maria is a charter member of the Central Coast Chapter of the APWA. The Santa Maria City Council has long supported the public works profession.
