FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF JUNE 4, 2024

COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT

TO: City Council

FROM: Interim City Manager Alex Posada

SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Pride Month” – June 2024

Present a Proclamation recognizing the month of June 2024, as “Pride Month” in the City of Santa Maria and encourag ing all residents and businesses to respect the entire community and build a culture that strives for equity and equality for all people.

BACKGROUND:

In the movement toward equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more (LGBTQ+) persons, a historic turning point occurred on June 28, 1969, in New York City, with the onset of the Stonewall Riots. LGBTQ+ citizens rose and fought against the discriminatory criminal laws that have since been declared unconstitutional. Pride celebrations have taken place around the country every June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, and 2024 marks the 55th Anniversary celebration of this pivotal moment in time.

This Proclamation is being brought forward as the City of Santa Maria has a diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more community, and is committed to supporting visibility, dignity, and equity for all people.

Proclamation requested by: Vice President of House of Pride and Equality (HOPE) Anais Diaz.
