FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF JUNE 4, 2024
COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
TO: City Council
FROM: Interim City Manager Alex Posada
SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Women Veterans Day” – June 12, 2024
Present a Proclamation recognizing June 12, 2024, as “Women Veterans Day” to honor and recognize the bravery of all women veterans, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives to protect our state and country.
BACKGROUND:
On June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Integration Act into law, allowing women to serve as permanent members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force.
Women veterans are a rapidly growing demographic in the U.S. military, expected to make up nearly 20 % of the veteran population by 2045. In Santa Barbara County, the "She Raised Her Hand" initiative supports women veterans by helping them find community, purpose, and strength. Women veterans from the county have served with honor in conflicts from World War II to the present and have been leaders in securing suffrage, equal opportunity, and driving social change. They continue to play critical roles in all areas of society. The county is dedicated to supporting and recognizing the bravery of all women veterans, including those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
DISCUSSION:
We are dedicated to supporting and recognizing the bravery of all women veterans, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We urge all residents and businesses in the City of Santa Maria to foster a culture of respect, equity, and equality for everyone.
