FOR THE COUNCIL MEETING OF AUGUST 20, 2024

COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT

TO: City Council

FROM: Interim City Manager Alex Posada

SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Women’s Equality Day” – August 26, 2024

The City Council will present a Proclamation recognizing August 26, 2024, as “Women’s Equality Day” in the City of Santa Maria.

BACKGROUND:

In 1971, at the initiative of Representative Bella Abzug (D -NY), and formally passed in 1973, the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.” This date was chosen to honor the certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920, which granted women the right to vote. The amendment marked the successful culmination of a vast and peaceful civil rights movement that began formally in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment but also highlights the ongoing efforts toward achieving full gender equality. Today, workplaces , libraries, organizations, and public institutions observe this day with various programs, displays, video presentations, and other activities.

DISCUSSION:

Women in the United States have long strived to achieve full rights and privileges, both public and private, legal and institutional, as citizens. Across all states and within every cultural and religious group, women worked tirelessly to secure the right to vote. In recognition of this effort, Congress designated August 26, the date of the certificat ion of the Nineteenth Amendment, as Women’s Equality Day. Celebrating this day nationwide underscores the vital role of women’s contributions to democracy and encourages all citizens to reflect on the significance of the women’s suffrage movement and the ongoing pursuit of equal rights.

Proclamation Requested by: League of Women Voters Northern Santa Barbara County and the American Association of University Women.
