FROM: Interim City Manager Alex Posada
BY: Interim Director of Community Development Dana Eady
SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week” October 7 through 11, 2024
Description:
The City Council will present a Proclamation to recognize October 7 through 11, 2024 as “Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week” to recognize and celebrate the role Code Enforcement Officers have in our communities.
BACKGROUND:
In September of 2018, the California State Legislature designated the second week of October as Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week. Since then, jurisdictions are encouraged to work with its local government to approve a Proclamation establishing the second week of October as Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week to honor the efforts of Code Enforcement Teams throughout the State.
DISCUSSION:
The City of Santa Maria’s Code Enforcement Division is currently made up of a Code Enforcement Manager and a Supervisor who lead a team of three Code Enforcement Officers and one Technician. Collectively , the team assists with a variety of issues including building, zoning, housing, blight, and health and safety violations. The team strives to assist the City in the prevention of neighborhood deterioration, as well as ensuring safety for both residents and businesses. Code Enforcement Officers have a highly visible role in the community as they serve and regularly interact with the public and a variety of Federal, State, County, and local officials. The positive and proactive role that Code Enforcement Offi cers play should be recognized, and therefore, it is recommended that the City Council recognize the second week of October 2024 as “Code Enforcement Officer Appreciation Week” in the City of Santa Maria.
