SUBJECT: Proclamation – “National Arts and Humanities Month” – October 2024
The City Council will p resent a Proclamation recognizing October as “National Arts and Humanities Month” in the City of Santa Maria.
BACKGROUND:
The National Arts and Humanities Month, celebrated every October, was established in 1993 by Americans for the Arts to recognize the vital role arts and culture play in American society. This annual celebration serves to encourage participation in creative activities, highlight the contributions of artists and cultural organizations, and promote public support for the arts and humanities. The month -long event brings together communities across the country to honor diverse artistic expressions, from visual arts and liter ature to music and theater. National Arts and Humanities Month also provides an opportunity for local governments, like ours, to reaffirm their commitment to fostering cultural enrichment and supporting artists who enhance the quality of life for all residents.
DISCUSSION:
National “Arts and Humanities Month” is an annual observance designed to highlight the variety of arts and humanities that are essential in creating a vibrant, cohesive community.
Studies show that the social benefits of participation in the arts are key to building a strong society and fostering strong, self-reliant, and proud communities. Research also confirms that children develop critical-thinking skills and improve focus when they receive a solid foundation in the arts.
