SUBJECT: Adoption of a Resolution Canceling the regular City Council meetings on October 15, 2024, and November 5, 2024.
Description:
The City Council will consider canceling the regular City Council meeting on October 15, 2024, and November 5, 2024.
Environmental Notice: The activity is not a “Project” as defined under Section 15378 of the California Environmental Quality Act State Guidelines; therefore, pursuant to State Guidelines Section 15060(c)(3) no environmental review is required.
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a Resolution canceling the regular City Council meetings on October 15, 2024, and November 5, 2024.
BACKGROUND:
Section 2-1.01 of the Santa Maria Municipal Code sets the time, day, and place for holding City Council meetings to discuss items of City business. The City Council has the authority to cancel meetings due to lack of a quorum or lack of business items.
DISCUSSION:
While many cities go “dark” for a meeting or two during the summer months or holiday season, the Santa Maria City Council has always met on the first and third Tuesday of each month with no pre-determined scheduled breaks.
Due to the League of California Cities Conference and subsequent lack of quorum scheduled for October 15, 2024 , City Council Meeting staff recommends that the City Council cancel the second meeting in October.
In light of Election Day falling on November 5, 2024, which coincides with the regularly scheduled City Council meeting, staff recommends canceling the first November meeting.
This will allow residents, Councilmembers, and staff sufficient time to participate in the important voting process. Any matters that arise can be addressed during the subsequent City Council meeting on November 19, 2024.

The City Council can decide not to cancel the October 15, 2024, and/or November 5, 2024, meeting and meet as regularly scheduled.
Fiscal Considerations
There is no foreseeable fiscal impact as a result of this agenda item.
Impact to the Community
While the public will not have the ability to bring concerns to the City Council on October 15, 2024, or November 5, 2024, due to the cancellation of the meetings, Councilmembers and staff remain available by email or telephone to address residents’ concerns during the regular business days.
