SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Child Abuse Awareness Month” – April 2025
The City Council will recognize the month of April 2025, as “Child Abuse Awareness Month” in the City of Santa Maria and encourage awareness in the City.
BACKGROUND:
Child abuse and neglect are serious community issues that require collective action to address. In North County, Child Welfare Services investigated 2,895 cases, with 2,015 occurring in Santa Maria. The effects of abuse impact the entire community, making awareness and prevention essential. Organizations like the North County Rape Crisis and Child Protection Center are dedicated to educating the public and hosting events to promote awareness and prevention. Successful child abuse prevention relies on collaboration among social services, schools, law enforcement, businesses, and residents. Everyone has a role in supporting families and ensuring children grow up in safe, nurturing environments.
