SUBJECT: Proclamation – “Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month” – April 2025
The City Council will recognize the month of April 2025 as “Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month’ in the City of Santa Maria and encourage all residents to take this opportunity to learn more about Parkinson’s disease, support those affected, and promote awareness efforts within our community
BACKGROUND:
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder, affecting nearly one million people in the U.S., with cases expected to rise to 1.2 million by 2030. It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and the 14th leading cause of death, with an annual economic burden of at least $52 billion. While its exact cause remains unknown, research points to genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms vary widely and can include tremor s, mobility challenges, cognitive decline, and mood disorders.
Volunteers, caregivers, and medical professionals continue to advance research, education, and support services to improve care and work toward better treatments.
