BACKGROUND:
National "Day of Prayer" is an annual event established by Congress to encourage Americans to pray for the nation, its people, and its leaders. The tradition of days of prayer dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress called for prayer. In 1952, the event was officially established by Congress and signed into law by President Truman. It was later amended in 1988 by President Reagan to be observed on the first Thursday of May each year. The Day of Prayer allows people to gather, pray, and strengthen u nity while honoring faith and freedoms. The Santa Maria Valley Community of Prayer is celebrating its 28th annual "Day of Prayer," hosting one of the largest gatherings in California.
