TO: Mayor and City Council

FROM: David W. Rowlands, City Manager

DATE: May 6, 2025

SUBJECT: Presentation - Businesses of the Quarter – April to June 2025

The City Council will recognize the Businesses of the Quarter (April to June 2025) – Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory & Memory Gardens and Straw Hat Pizza.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Santa Maria and the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce are partnering to highlight different businesses in the city through a Business of the Quarter Program.

On four occasions this calendar year, this program will recognize local businesses chosen by the Chamber. The criteria are: Approximately 20 employees; in operation for at least five years; physically located wit hin the City Limits; and being a local Chamber of Commerce member in good standing. Not only does this give them valuable exposure. It also reminds the community of the unique, diverse, and long-standing businesses we are fortunate to have in Santa Maria.

Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, Crematory & Memory Gardens is located on a pproximately

2.5 acres at 1003 East Stowell Road. Since 1876, it has provided service and guidance for the community. The family -owned business provides those who are grieving with a supportive environment in which they can begin to find closure and come to terms with the loss. Its Memory Gardens were built in 1978. The business hopes to one day expand its Memory Gardens and Cremation capabilities to better serve the community.

Representing the business tonight is Michael Hoffman, Vice President.

Straw Hat Pizza is located at 1822 North Broadway. This family pizza restaurant has 20 employees. Owners Randy and Mary Wise have seen significant sales growth by being actively involved in the community. Sports teams, churches, birthday parties, and service clubs are a vital part of their success. They purchased the business in 1984. The first location in town opened in 1967 and closed in 2001. This location they opened in 1996 and is still going strong. Representing the business tonight are the Owners Randy and Mary Wise.
